THE SCHOOL MILK PROGRAM

Background

Warm greetings from the management and Board of governors for MDL. We are grateful for the training and educating the future generation of our country.

In Masaka Diocese, the Cow Program started in 1993 with 3 farmers who were given Cows. Later on the number increased to 24 farmers and currently we have 2443 farmers who have benefited from the program.  The program continues by a pass-ons mechanism. And it has spread to 7 districts of Greater Masaka Region. In 2003 a mini dairy was launched by then Minister of finance Hon. Gerald Ssendawula in response to the outcry of the farmers to add value to their milk. On 4th December 2018, it was registered with the registrar of companies and become a legal entity with registration number 80020001453990 and it’s also registered by the Dairy Development Authority with certificate No 1896 certified by the National Environment authority and its products were approved by the Uganda National Bureau of standards ( UNBS)

MDL’s COW PROGRAM GOALS

  • Improve people’s standards of living through milk as a source of income, animal manure which fertilizes their gardens enabling high harvest of crops both for sale and home consumption.
  • Support the establishment of other income-generating sources through milk sales like piggery, poultry and goat rearing.
  • Enables farmers’ children to acquire education as most farmers use the milk sales to pay school fees for their children. (16 of them have completed the University, 2 have been  ordained priests and ten Nuns)
  • Boosts crop harvest as farmers use cow dung and bio slurry to fertilize their gardens

VALUE ADDITION

Around 2000 liters of milk are produced by the farmers and we add value thru producing
pasteurized whole milk, 250gms, yoghurt in Vanilla( 200 and 400gms and Strawberry( 200 and
400gms) in pouches and cups 250g and 500g both vanilla and strawberry as shown

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

  • School milk contributes to improved enrolment and decreased drop-out rates among school children from socio-economically weaker populations. In situations where few children have sufficient access to nutritious food, school milk programs aim to improve schooling for children by helping to fulfill their basic needs for adequate nutrition through providing them with milk – a nutritious, protein-rich food.
  • This is also to answer the appeal by Ugandan Ministry of Education to feed the learners with milk.
  • In line with the above ideas the program intends;
    • To aid normal growth and development
    • Improvement of general heath of the children
    • To increase school performance, Hungry students are tired students and learn less. A mid-morning break with milk makes a difference
    • School children develop good nutritional habits, which are part of healthy living, at a tender age
  • Better school attendance, less truancy and fewer dropouts
  • Bettering the children´s nutrition we will have productive adults and thus a more developed country and a better future too.
