The Best Milk Production Market
"YOUR LIFE COMPANION"
MADDO Dairies Ltd is a dairy processing factory and a registered limited company by guarantee. On 4th December
2018 it was registered with the registrar of companies and become a legal entity with a Registration number
80020001453990. The company was borne from the dairy project that started in 1993 with three farmers who were
provided with one heifer each from Heifer Project International donated by Bothar Ireland with an intended
objective to improve nutrition, reliable market for farmers’ milk, provide employment for the youth, food and
income security among the people of the Masaka Diocese.
After intensive training in dairy farming and sustainable agriculture, 24 more farmers in Kalungu District qualified
and each received one heifer. From that time the program expanded and Heifer Project International provided more
heifers and more milk volumes were produced. As a result of increasing milk volumes with limited market base,
farmers requested Caritas MADDO to avail a ready and reliable market for their milk.
To enhance the start-up enterprise, in 2001 Land O’Lakes supported MADDO Dairies to conduct a market survey to
establish the consumption patterns of the various dairy products in Uganda. This showed that pasteurized non-
flavored milk, chocolate-flavored milk and yoghurt were amongst the first three highly consumed products
In 2003, MADDO Dairies with the help of Heifer Project international and Bothar Ireland started a mini dairy with
three staff. They started improving collective marketing and quality milk from dairy farmers from the lower levels of
farmer groups which comprised of 30 members per each group. On the 18th June 2003, 350 liters of milk were
purchased from farmers and was processed into pasteurized chocolate flavored milk. MADDO Dairies was officially
commissioned and began operating as a dairy processing company on 8th August 2003.
From the inception of the project up to date, Bothar and Heifer International have so far provided 793 original and
pass-ons cows. !n 2009 Micro financing Partners in Africa joined Caritas MADDO and has so far provided 1650
Original and pass-ons cows. At the moment MADDO Dairies has provided 2,443 families with quality Frisian cows in
the Districts of Masaka, Rakai, Kalungu, Lwengo, Bukomansimbi and Kyotera.
Five milk collection centres have been established and owned by the five farmers’ cooperatives in order to ease the
collection of milk from the farmers to the dairy so as to control the increased volumes of milk.
